Watch: Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews combine for World Cup goal
Sometimes, you get a gift from the hockey gods, and sometimes you’re lucky enough get a few of them at once.
While some might argue that Team North America is a reward of its own, the squad stacked with the NHL’s top under-23 players bequeathed the night’s first present when the last two No. 1 draft picks Connor McDavid (2015) and Auston Matthews (2016) activated their Wonder Twin powers against Team Russia on Monday.
The hockey world has gushed over both players, and this display of speed, skill and deft hands showed why.

Oh, and since the McDavid-to-Matthews magic is something that we'll only get to see a handful of times over their careers, the Hockey Deities provided another gift on the play in ESPN’s ref cam, which allowed us to witness the goal from an ice-level view.

Team North America is a dark horse favorite to run the table at the World Cup, meaning we might just get a few more chances to see McDavid and Matthews wow us all before they go their separate ways for the NHL season.
Even the Hockey Gods will agree, we need as much of this as we can get.
