Colombian weightlifter wins gold medal, then retires on the spot

Published Aug. 9, 2016 1:56 p.m. ET

Thirty-three-year-old Colombian weightlifter Oscar Figueroa won a gold medal in the 62-kilogram weight class by lifting a total of 318 kilograms (just over 700 pounds) Monday, six kilograms more than the silver medalist from Indonesia. Figueroa already had the gold medal locked up before he attempted his third lift, and though he couldn't improve his total, Figueroa broke into tears after dropping the bar to the floor.

As he received an ovation from the crowd, Figueroa kissed the bar, then removed his shoes and set them on the platform — a tradition in weightlifting that means he's competed for the final time.
