Friedrich wins first 2-man bobsled World Cup of the season

ALTENBERG, Germany (AP) World champion Francesco Friedrich of Germany defeated Oskars Melbardis of Latvia to win the first two-man bobsled World Cup of the season on Saturday.

Friedrich and brakeman Thorsten Margis were 0.12 seconds behind the overall World Cup winner after a first run of 55.92 seconds, but clinched victory by 0.06 seconds with a second run of 56.64 for a combined time of 1:52.56.

Melbardis and brakeman Daumants Dreiskens had runs of 55.80 and 57.22 for a combined time of 1:53.02.

Won Yun-jong and Seo Young-woo finished third after runs of 55.96 and 57.08 for 1:53.04 gave South Korea its first podium position.

Germany's Maximilian Arndt and Kevin Kuske, and Nico Walther and Christian Poser, were fourth and fifth, respectively, ahead of Canada's Justin Kripps and Alexander Kopacz.
