Norway wins biathlon mixed relays in season-opener

OSTERSUND, Sweden (AP) Norway won both races Sunday as the biathlon World Cup season started with two separate mixed relays.

Kaia Woeien Nicolaisen and Lars Helge Birkeland combined to win a 2x6-kilometer single mixed relay, a new format that features just two skiers on each team. The duo finished in 36 minutes, 27.3 seconds to beat Canada by 11.9 seconds and Germany by 13.2.

In a regular mixed relay, with two men and two women on each team, Tarjei Boe skied the anchor leg to lead Norway to a big win ahead of Germany and the Czech Republic. Norway, with Fanny Horn Birkeland, Tiril Eckhoff and Johannes Thingnes Boe also on the team, finished in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 42.6 seconds. Germany was 33.6 seconds back and the Czechs 1:11.5 behind.
