Pele bows out of Olympics opening ceremonies due to illness

Brazilian soccer legend Pele will not take part in Friday's opening ceremonies for the 2016 Summer Olympics due to illness, according to reports.
"I'm not in physical condition to take part in the opening ceremony," the 75-year-old said. "Only God is more important than my health. In my life, I've had fractures, surgeries, pain, hospital stays, victories and defeats. And I've always respected those who admire me."
Pele, who led Brazil to three World Cup titles, has been battling several illnesses.

In May 2015, he had prostate surgery. That July he was back in the hospital for back surgery. He has also had multiple hip operations.
He was believed to be a favorite to light the flame to start the Games.
