2015 NFL mock drafts: Who will the Vikings select?
The long wait for the NFL Draft is almost over. All the talk, conjecture, speculation and rumors will soon be a thing of the past.
But it's not here yet. So why not add a little fuel to the fire with a detailed roundup of mock drafts from around the web and who they have the Vikings taking?
Some of these mocks only do one round, a couple have two rounds and a few go for the whole enchilada -- seven rounds. I tried to keep this to mocks just done in the past couple of days -- and there will surely be more coming out after we've posted this -- but I think this is a pretty hefty list.
Of course, Minnesota could well trade down in the first round, but this still makes for some interesting talk.
OK, with all that being said, here's the latest mocks (and make sure to check out Brian Hall's thoughts on the first-round pick Thursday as well as the rest of our draft coverage):
FOXSports.com's Peter Schrager (7 rounds): 1. Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State; 2. Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke; 3. Tyler Lockett, WR, Kansas State; 4. Matt Jones, RB, Florida; 5. Austin Shepherd, OT, Alabama; 7a. Trenton Brown, OG, Florida; 7b. Jamarcus Nelson, WR, UAB.
DraftTek (7 rounds): 1. Randy Gregory, OLB, Nebraska; 2. A.J. Cann, OG, South Carolina; 3. Quinten Rollins, CB, Miami (Ohio); 4. Jaquiski Tartt, S, Samford; 5. Anthony Chickillo, DE, Miami; 7a. Junior Sylvestre, ILB, Toledo; 7b. Andrew Donnal, OT, Iowa.
Walter Cherepinsky, WalterFootball.com (7 rounds): 1. DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville; 2. Eric Rowe, CB, Utah; 3. Trey Flowers, DE/OLB, Arkansas; 4. Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina; 5. Ray Drew, DE/DT, Georgia; 7a. Ryan Russell, DE, Purdue; 7b. Damien Wilson, LB, Minnesota.
Charlie Campbell, WalterFootball.com (7 rounds): 1. Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State; 2. Shaq Thompson, OLB, Washington; 3. Devin Funchess, WR/TE, Michigan; 4. Jeremiah Poutasi, G/T, Utah; 5. Josh Robinson, RB, Mississippi State; 7a. Zack Hodges, LB, Harvard; 7b. Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon.
Eddie Brown, UT-San Diego (7 rounds): 1. DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville; 2. Jalen Collins, CB, LSU; 3. Paul Dawson, ILB, TCU; 4. Jesse Sample, S, Louisville; 5. Josue Matias, OG, Florida State; 7a. Zack Wagenmann, DE, Montana; 7b. Andrew Donnal, OT, Iowa.
The National Football Post's Greg Gabriel: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State. "If they don't make this selection, they could very well choose a wide receiver."
USAToday's Nate Davis: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State. "Bolstering the secondary with a talented cover man like Waynes aces the common-sense test."
CBSSports.com's Pete Prisco: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State. "The Vikings could use a receiver, but with the top two off the board, I like Waynes in this spot. They need another corner to pair with Xavier Rhodes."
SI.com's Peter King: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State. "Might be too light at 186 to be the kind of physical corner many teams would want, but the only highlight I saw of Waynes in run defense put the kibosh on that: In the 2013 Big Ten championship game, he made a physical stop of Ohio State's Carlos Hyde (40 pounds heavier) for no gain. Mike Zimmer needs two good physical cover corners, and adding Waynes to Xavier Rhodes would give the Vikes two first-round young players at that position." Note: King does include Minnesota among the teams "trying hard to trade down for more picks."
SI.com's Greg Bedard's anti-mock, i.e., who teams should pick. Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State. " The Vikings are fooling themselves if they think they're set at cornerback in the NFC North with veterans Terrence Newman and Captain Munnerlyn behind Xavier Rhodes. Waynes isn't a no-doubt talent (few college cornerbacks are), but he played in a pro-style defense and is fast and tough."
Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.co, (2 rounds): 1. Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State."While the Terrance Newman signing was good for depth, the Vikings still have a need at cornerback and could draft the top defensive back on their board with this pick."; 2. Benardrick McKinney, ILB, Mississippi State.
Rob Rang, The Sports Xchange (2 rounds): 1. Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State. "Given the caliber of receivers Minnesota faces in the NFC North, it wouldn't be a surprise to see defensive-minded head coach Mike Zimmer push for another long, lanky corner for his scheme, especially should the top talent at the position fall in his lap."; 2. Laken Tomlinson, G, Duke. "Whether or not Adrian Peterson remains in purple shouldn't keep the Vikings from reinforcing the offensive line."
Mark Eckel, NJ.com: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State. "Playing in a division with Aaron Rodgers and Calvin Johnson, you can't have enough good cornerbacks."
TheTampa Tribune's Ira Kaufman: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville.
Jay Skurski, Buffalo News: La'el Collins, LSU. Skurski has Minnesota trading up one spot to make this pick.
Karen Guregian, Boston Herald: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State.
The News Journal's Martin Frank: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville.
The Kansas City Star's Terez A. Paylor: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville.
MassLive.com's Nick O'Malley: Marcus Peters, CB, Washington.
Matthew Fairburn, Syracuse.com: Bud Dupree, DE, Kentucky. "Trae Waynes has been the popular pick for the Vikings, but Bud Dupree is too talented to pass up at this spot."
The Schenectady Daily Gazette's Mark McGuire: Randy Gregory, DE/OLB, Nebraska.
Matt Falk and Nik Edlund of DraftSeason.com: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State. "The Vikings are a tough team to peg in this year's draft, but one thing is certain, adding a corner will be near the top of their wish list. Waynes is widely seen as the top corner in the draft with a nice combination of size and speed. Pairing him with Xavier Rhodes would help this secondary match up with the bigger receivers of the NFC North. As always, a trade is a possibility with general manager Rick Spielman as he's proven in recent years that he's not afraid to move up or down the board."
NFL.com's Charles Davis: Kevin White, WR, West Virginia. "My top-ranked WR comes off the board here, and immediately helps second-year QB Teddy Bridgewater. Louisville WR DeVante Parker will be a consideration, as will Michigan State CB Trae Waynes."
NFL.com's Charley Casserly: Devante Parker, WR, Louisville.
NFL.com's Lance Zierlein and Chad Reuter (7 rounds): 1. Brandon Scherff, OL, Iowa; 2. Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana; 3. P.J. Williams, CB, Florida State; 4. Gabe Wright, DT, Auburn; 5. Jamison Crowder, WR, Duke; 7a., Dres Anderson, WR, Utah; 7b., John Timu, ILB, Washington
Jonathan Mack, NFL Draft Blitz (7 rounds): 1. Marcus Peters, CB, Washington; 2. Mario Edwards, DE, Florida State; 3. Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke; 4. Trae McBride, WR, William & Mary; 5. James Sample, S, Louisville; 7a. Malcolm Brown, RB, Texas; 7b. Zach Vigil, ILB, Utah State.
Brian Perez, Draft Breakdown: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville. "This pick simply makes too much sense NOT to happen. While Parker has gained some last-minute momentum, I think he'll still be hanging around when the Vikings are on the clock. You can bet that Teddy Bridgewater will be lobbying for this pick, and why not make your young, franchise quarterback happy? Parker will be setup for early success ; He'll be entering the League already having familiarity with his quarterback. Add in the fact that he's a supremely gifted prospect, and you have a virtual 'no-brainer' pick."
Jeff Feyerer, Ourlads': DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville.
Dave Birkett, Detroit Free-Press: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State.
Rotoworld's Josh Norris: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State.
MyNFLDraft.com (2 rounds): 1. Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State; 2. Shaq Thompson, OLB, Washington.
Barry Wilner, The Associated Press: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State
Robert Davis, Football's Future: DeVante Parker, WR, Louisville. "Teddy Bridgewater is re-united with Parker from their Louisville days, and he quickly emerges as his new go to target."
Kevin Roberts, Breaking Football: Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa. "Minnesota needs to patch up an inconsistent offensive line and Scherff can play all across the line. They could also make a splash with a receiver but this is the smarter pick."
