In the midst of dropping their seventh consecutive game Saturday, the Milwaukee Brewers lost left fielder Khris Davis for what appears to be an extended period of time.

Davis exited Milwaukee's 7-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks after striking out swinging in the bottom of the first inning. After the game, Davis said he suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee on the final swing of the at-bat.

By the time the clubhouse opened to reporters, Davis had already been informed the injury will require surgery, which he says is scheduled for Tuesday.

"Took an awkward swing," Davis said. "Knee over-rotated and got some meniscus tear, so."

The Brewers did not immediately announce a roster move to place Davis on the disabled list, but they do have to clear a roster spot for right-hander Tyler Wagner, who is making his first big-league start Sunday against the Diamondbacks.

In his second full season with the Brewers, Davis is hitting .250 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 46 games. Gerardo Parra likely will become Milwaukee's starting left fielder with Davis headed for the disabled list.

If the Brewers opt to recall an outfielder from Triple-A, Shane Peterson and Logan Schafer are the likely candidates because they are on the 40-man roster. Peterson entered Saturday hitting .333 with seven home runs and 27 RBI for Colorado Springs, while Schafer has a .230 batting average in 19 games with the Sky Sox.

"We'll know more (Sunday), I think, and we'll figure out what we're going to do with it (Sunday)," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "There's enough concern where we're going to have to see what happens when he shows up (Sunday). He'll have some more tests."

Davis' injury leaves first baseman Adam Lind is the only Opening Day position player who has been available every day this season.

When asked about the tough times facing the 16-34 Brewers, Davis summed up the situation with two words.

"The worst," Davis said.
