Angels not putting a date on Weaver's return
It's still up in the air whether or not Jered Weaver will return to the Angels' lineup before the All-Star break.
Weaver threw a bullpen session Monday, and he threw off flat ground Tuesday.
The Angels' right-hander has more bullpens scheduled in the coming days.
Skipper Mike Scioscia was asked by FOXSportsWest.com if Weaver could return before the all-star break?
"It's going to be close," Scioscia said. "I don't know. We're not going to rush it. We're going to let him go on his own time.
"If it comes quicker, sure. If not, we're not going to put a date on it right now."
Weaver was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 21 with left hip inflammation. He will be able to return from the disabled list early next week. However, Scioscia confirmed Andrew Heaney remains in line to make his next start on the team's upcoming nine-game road trip. Heaney is slotted to start the series opener in Colorado. It would be his third start since being called up to replace Weaver in the rotation.
Heaney threw six innings, allowed four hits and one earned run in his Angels debut last week but didn't factor into the decision. He's scheduled to be on the bump again on Tuesday against the Yankees.
If Heaney, in fact, does make his scheduled start in Colorado, that leaves Weaver to make just one start before the all-star break if he's taken off of the disabled list. That start will likely be in the final game of the first half of the season unless someone's start is pushed back.
"He feels good," Scioscia said of Weaver. "It's just going to be a progression of your easy bullpens into your little, harder pens.
"We're not going to get another read on him until he gets a couple of more pens and we can evaluate where he is."
