The Houston Astros have not only surprised the rest of the baseball world with their arguably improbable run to the playoffs this season: They may have even surprised themselves.
How else can it be explained that the team allowed a Taylor Swift concert to be scheduled at Minute Maid Park on Oct. 13, smack dab in the middle of when the team conceivably could be hosting a potential playoff game?
The Astros announced via Twitter that it has a contingency plan in place should the team qualify for the postseason.
Evan Drellich, Astros beat writer for the Houston Chronicle, reported in a tweet that the stop by Swift on her “1989” tour will be moved from the original October date to Sept. 9, when the team will be in Oakland for a three-game series with the Athletics.
It’s hardly surprising that those in charge of scheduling non-baseball events at Minute Maid Park felt at the time they booked the Swift concert that it was extremely unlikely that the Astros (55-45) would be sniffing a postseason berth, let alone occupying the top Wild Card in the American League in late July. As it stands, not only are the Astros in prime position for a Wild Card berth, the team is nipping at the heels of the Los Angeles Angels, sitting only one game back in the AL West.
Swift seems to manage to get her name in the sports news cycle surprisingly often, from rumors that she is in talks to be the headlining performer at Super Bowl 50 to a pugilist touting himself as the “Taylor Swift of Boxing” following a recent bout. Then there’s the Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler’s apparent infatuation with the pop songstress, not to mention her affinity for the New York Knicks.
It would be at this point where references to Swift songs like “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space” and the sort would be apropos. But that’s not this here site’s “Style” and it’s arguably best to avoid any “Bad Blood” and leave it alone.
Oops. We were almost “Out of the Woods” there, but couldn’t quite seal the deal.
