Australia 121-3 at lunch, 1st day of 1st test vs West Indies

HOBART, Australia (AP) West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican took the important wickets of opener David Warner and captain Steve Smith as Australia went to lunch at 121-3 Thursday on the first day of the opening test.

Warner and Joe Burns smashed a combined 12 boundaries in a the quick-fire opening partnership of 75 runs from the first eight overs after Smith won the toss and elected to bat first on a greenish Bellerive Oval wicket.

Burns was clean-bowled by paceman Shannon Gabriel for 33 and Smith was caught at first slip off Warrican for 10.

Warner scored 64 before being caught behind in the second-last over before lunch as Australia lost three wickets for 51 runs.

Warner was nearly out on 4 when diving wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin let a close chance go to the boundary in the second over.

Adam Voges was on 9 with Shaun Marsh yet to score at the lunch break.

The West Indies are coming off a 10-wicket loss to a Cricket Australia XI in a tour match last week

Australia gave fast bowler James Pattinson his first test start in 18 months, replacing the injured Mitchell Starc. Cricket Australia said Thursday that Starc, injured in the final New Zealand test last month, will undergo surgery on his right ankle.

Offspin bowler Nathan Lyon is playing in his 50th test for Australia.
