Australia 70-1 at lunch after W Indies removes Warner early
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Paceman Jerome Taylor claimed the important wicket of opener David Warner early on the opening day of the second test as the West Indies worked well to contain Australia's top order Saturday.
Australia was 70-1 at lunch after West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bowl after a delay of an hour due to rain.
Warner looked dangerous once the players eventually took the field, stroking five boundaries in the first three overs before skying a short-pitched Taylor delivery to Marlon Samuels at extra-cover for 23 off just 12 balls.
Joe Burns (27) and fit-again Usman Khawaja (18) continued more sedately to share an unbeaten 41-run second-wicket partnership to the lunch break.
Khawaja returns to Australia's lineup at No. 3 after missing the previous two tests with a left hamstring injury. His inclusion came at the expense of Shaun Marsh, who scored 182 runs in the opening test at Hobart, which Australia won by an innings and 212 runs.
The West Indies named Carlos Brathwaite for his test debut, replacing injured paceman Shannon Gabriel. Brathwaite has played seven one-day internationals.
Legspinner Devendra Bishoo, who was also considered a possible replacement for Gabriel, was unavailable for selection after injuring his left shoulder in training. Team management said Saturday that Bishoo will undergo scans for what is a suspected rotor cuff injury.
