Badgers lineman sings country song, sounds as expected
Tyler Marz is the Wisconsin Badgers' starting left tackle. As such, he is responsible for protecting the blind side of the quarterback from onrushing defenders.
However, as such, he is not responsible for protecting the integrity of honky-tonk country music from his own vocal massacre.
Marz was filmed singing the chorus of Joe Diffie's tractor-tender love ballad "John Deere Green" for a Camp Randall game-day feature, and the Wisconsin football Twitter account released the video to (or, unleashed it upon) Badger Nation on Wednesday morning.
The efforts of the guy FOXSportsWisconsin.com ranked as the team's 11th most important player appeared to be part of the preseason taping of Wisconsin's "Ask the Badgers" segments -- players' lighthearted and fan-friendly responses to submitted questions -- that are shown on the stadium video board during football, basketball and hockey games.
Marz's spot could suggest that his favorite song is the dithering Diffie ditty, which was released in 1993, one year before the redshirt senior was born. Or, perhaps, the lyric Marz ends with in the video, "And the whole town said the boy should have used red" will be a line used to stir up the Badgers' cardinal-colored Camp Randall crowd.
"Is that enough?" Marz asks at the end. Yes, Tyler. That's plenty. You're no Vitto Brown.
