Beavers, Bohringer among those waived by Vikings

Published Sep. 3, 2016 5:12 p.m. ET

The Minnesota Vikings on Saturday trimmed their roster to 53, waiving 19 players, releasing another and placing two on injured reserve.

Among those waived was guard Willie Beavers, whom the team picked in the fourth round of this year's draft. The team also waived German wide receiver and sixth-round pick Moritz Bohringer, the first player in NFL history drafted straight from Europe, and defensive end and seventh-round pick Stephen Weatherly.

Quarterbacks Joel Stave and Brad Sorensen were also cut by the Vikings, who sent their 2017 first-round draft pick and a 2018 fourth-round selection to the Philadelphia Eagles for Sam Bradford earlier in the day. With Teddy Bridgewater on injured reserve and Taylor Heinicke on the non-football injury list, the Vikings have only two quarterbacks for now with Shaun Hill and Bradford.

Minnesota released 28-year-old defensive tackle Kendrick Ellis, a five-year veteran. Ellis played nine games for the Vikings last year, recording five tackles.

The team placed safety Michael Griffin and cornerback Jabari Price on injured reserve. The 31-year-old Griffin signed a one-year deal with the Vikings this offseason after nine season with the Tennessee Titans.

The Vikings drafted Price, 24, in the seventh round in 2014. He played 10 games that year and spent most of last season on injured reserve. Price sustained a knee injury Thursday during Minnesota's preseason victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Griffin was signed to compete for the starting spot opposite Harrison Smith, but incumbent Andrew Sendejo has kept that job for now. The Vikings kept six cornerbacks, leaving little room for Price.

The offensive line will look a lot different than last season. Behind starters Matt Kalil, Alex Boone, Joe Berger, Brandon Fusco and Andre Smith, the Vikings kept backup tackles T.J. Clemmings and Jeremiah Sirles, backup guard Zac Kerin and backup center Nick Easton.

The NFL required all teams to cut their rosters from 75 to 53 players by 3 p.m. Saturday.
