Blue Jackets sign Jenner to 2-year extension
COLUMBUS, OH -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Boone Jenner to a two-year contract extension through the 2017-18 National Hockey League season, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
Jenner, 22, has set career highs in goals, assists (tied) and points this season with 22 goals and 13 assists for 35 points to go along with 65 penalty minutes in 63 games. He ranks second on the club in goals, power play goals (seven), game-winning goals (two, tied), shots (174) and hits (167), while ranking third in penalty minutes (tied) and fifth in points. One of the club's alternate captains, he is one of three Blue Jackets -- Ryan Murray and Gregory Campbell -- that have played in all 63 games this season.
"Boone Jenner is a terrific young player, who works extremely hard at both ends of the ice and is just beginning to scratch the surface of what he can be as a National Hockey League player," said Kekalainen. "He has tremendous character and is an exemplary representative of our club on and off the ice."
Selected by Columbus in the second round, 37th overall in the 2011 NHL Draft, Jenner has registered 47-34-81 and 122 penalty minutes in 166 career games. In 2013-14, he tallied 16-13-29 and 45 penalty minutes in 72 games. His 16 goals were the second-most by a rookie in club history (17, Rick Nash in 2002-03) and tied for sixth among first-year NHL players that season. He also tied for the NHL rookie lead with five game-winning goals, which is the most by a rookie in club history.
A native of Dorchester, Ontario, he notched 9-8-17 and 12 penalty minutes last season as injuries limited him to 31 games played. Jenner represented Canada at the 2012 and 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship tournaments, winning a bronze medal in 2012. He played four seasons with the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals from 2009-13, registering 111-135-246 and 265 penalty minutes in 227 career games and serving as team captain during his final two seasons.
