ST. LOUIS -- In a sign that perhaps veteran Kevin Shattenkirk is ready to return, the St. Louis Blues assigned defenseman Chris Butler to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, on Thursday.

Shattenkirk has missed the last 10 games with a groin injury. Though he has been practicing in recent days, the 2014 U.S. Olympian apparently has not been ready for prime time yet.

Butler, 29, has served two penalty minutes in two games with the Blues this season. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound defenseman has also recorded one assist in one game with the Wolves.
