Blues sign Steen to four-year contract extension
ST. LOUIS -- One of the Blues' key offensive players will be around for a while.
Alexander Steen, who is entering his ninth season with The Note, has signed a four-year contract extension worth $23 million, the team announced Friday.
"We are extremely excited to have Alexander signed for the next four seasons," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said in a team press release. "He has developed into one of the league's premier 200-foot players and is a key member of our leadership group. He has shown tremendous loyalty to the Blues organization, its fans and the St. Louis community."
Steen is recovering from shoulder surgery that caused him to miss 15 regular-season games before returning late last season. His postseason surgery kept him from playing for Team Sweden in the World Cup of Hockey, but he hopes to be ready for the season opener Oct. 12.
Steen, 32, ranked second on the Blues with 35 assists and 52 points in 67 regular-season games last season. His 17 goals ranked fifth. He led the Blues to their first trip to the Western Conference finals in 15 years, posting 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 20 games.
Steen ranks 11th in club history with 355 points (147 goals, 208 assists). He has developed into one of the league's most versatile two-way forwards, averaging over a minute-and-a-half of shorthanded ice time and two-and-a-half minutes of power play ice time per game while recording a +54 rating since joining the club.
