Bracketology roundup: Gophers a No. 5 seed after loss to Badgers
Their resume took a hit in Madison on Sunday, but despite being mistakenly left off a -- since corrected -- USA Today bracket, the University of Minnesota men's basketball team is on track to earn a No. 5 seed on Selection Sunday.
The Gophers missed out on a shot at the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament after having their eight-game winning streak snapped with a 66-49 loss to Wisconsin.
But despite USA Today's mix-up and the loss to Badgers, the Gophers are in line for a No. 5 or No. 6 seed when the brackets are announced Sunday.
USA Today's revised projections have the Gophers headed to Orlando to face UNC-Wilmington as a No. 5 seed opposite No. 4 Florida and No. 13 Vermont.
FOX Sports' own Stewart Mandel sent Minnesota to Greenville, S.C. as a No. 6 seed to face Providence prior to the Badgers game, placing them alongside No. 3 Duke and No. 14 Akron.
NBA Sports likes Minnesota as a No. 5 too, and has the Gophers in Buffalo with No. 12 Nevada, as well as No. 4 Virginia and No. 13 Akron.
Yahoo Sports and SB Nation also project the Gophers as a No. 5 seed, while ESPN settled on a No. 6 seed and sent Minnesota to Salt Lake City with No. 11 Syracuse, No. 3 Arizona and No. 14 UNC Greensboro.
Most pundits agreed.
Bracket Matrix projects the Gophers as the tourney's last No. 5, with three sites naming them a No. 4 seed and four slotting them as low as a No. 7.
