Braves starter Brandon McCarthy leaves game after dislocating non-throwing shoulder

Veteran starter Brandon McCarthy left Wednesday afternoon's game after partially dislocating his non-throwing shoulder on a routine play covering first base. The Atlanta Braves right-hander is listed as day-to-day.

McCarthy suffered the injury in the bottom of the fifth inning at Nationals Park after reaching back slightly to catch Freddie Freeman's underhand toss on a routine groundout at the first-base bag. The 34-year-old immediately grabbed his upper left arm and called for head trainer George Poulis, who immediately popped the shoulder back into place.

"You're very aware something's gone really wrong," McCarthy said. "It's just it's a very uncomfortable, very weird feeling. ... It's not that it's tremendous pain, it's just tremendous discomfort."

Braves manager Brian Snitker said his rotation's vet is still scheduled to make his next start.

"He was fine when he came back in. It's nothing you want to keep messing with," Snitker said of McCarthy. "But George (Poulis) said he should be fine for the next start."

McCarthy encountered a similar injury twice last season while pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I know exactly what it feels like when it happens," McCarthy said. "So it's just, 'Let's hurry up and get it back in.' And then from there I know it's sore tonight, sore tomorrow and then the day after that it just kinda starts to feel normal again and I can work through it.

" ... It's something that has to be surgically repaired at some point. I didn't want to do it for this season. So I know that the possibility exists. I know how to get through it, more or less."

Through 16 1/3 innings pitched this season, McCarthy owns a 3.31 ERA with 12 strikeouts and six walks.
