Brendan Schaub responds to controversy over Ronda Rousey and Brazilian fighter comments
Schaub went on to explain that his approach is to speak without regard for possible repercussions from powers that be. "There's no motive here," he explained.
"A lot of other podcasts, they suck on the teat of the UFC. We do not. So, I say what I want, when I want."
When Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor Eddie Bravo suggested that Schaub and Rousey get back together, Schaub explained why that wasn't something that would work. Follow-up coverage of Schaub's comments seemed to suggest that he felt he was "too much of a man" for the UFC champ.
That couldn't be further from the truth, according to Schaub. "Anyone who knows me ... knows I'm a huge Ronda Rousey fan," he insisted.
"I love that girl. I'll defend her to the death. I always do. ... The thing about Fight Companion is, it's four dudes. Four really close friends. There's wine going around. No excuses, but the reason the show is so successful, and this show is so successful, is you feel like one of the guys. We're literally just talking. There's no filter.
"When Eddie poked the bear and said you guys should get back together. I said, 'I'm not the guy for the job, man.' I'm not talking sh-- about Ronda, at all. Listen, she's a type-A personality, I'm a type-A personality. For whatever reason, those don't mix for Big Brown. That might work for her, but they don't mix for me. So, (we) decided to go our separate ways. There's nothing wrong with that at all. There's no reason to have hurt feelings."
Schaub's and Rousey's personalities simply didn't click, according to the heavyweight. It certainly wasn't about his being too strong for the Rowdy one, he says.
"Too much man? I would never say that," he maintained.
"I'm a guy who watches romantic comedies. ... I read some books, I drink coffee. I'm not that manly."
