Brewers place Jimmy Nelson on 60-day DL, call up six Biloxi prospects
The Milwaukee Brewers made a few roster moves on Tuesday, including several late-September call-ups.
The Brewers placed starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson on the 60-day disabled list with a head contusion. Nelson was injured when a batted ball struck him in the head during a start against the Cardinals last week and he spent time in the hospital.
The club also announced that it had promoted right-handed pitchers Jorge Lopez, Tyler Wagner, Yhonathan Barrios and Adrian Houser, as well as outfielder Michael Reed and infielder Yadiel Rivera from Double-A Biloxi. The Shuckers' successful season ended Monday night with a loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts in the Southern League Championship Series. The Brewers had resisted promoting Biloxi players while they were in the midst of a playoff campaign.
Lopez, the Brewers' pitcher of the year for 2015, and Wagner, whose season was nearly as stellar as his fellow starter, headline the call-ups. Lopez went 12-5 with a 2.26 ERA in 24 starts, and 137 strikeouts to 52 walks over 143 1/3 innings. Wagner's numbers were almost identical -- he had an 11-5 record with a 2.25 ERA in 25, and 120 strikeouts to 45 walks in 152 1/3 innings. Wagner also pitched two complete games and a shutout.
On Tuesday morning, Wagner tweeted a picture of himself with teammates at the airport traveling from Atlanta to Chicago, where they will join the Brewers for their series against the Cubs.

Houser, another starter, went 4-1 with a 2.92 ERA in seven starts at Biloxi, with 32 strikeouts and six walks over 37 innings. Barrios, a reliever, was 3-2 with a 3.15 ERA in 16 appearances with the Shuckers. Reed had a .278/.379/.422 line in 93 games with Biloxi, while Rivera's was .277/.345/.375 in 52 games with the Shuckers.
Milwaukee also transferred right-handed pitcher Michael Blazek (fractured right hand) to the 60-day DL.
