Brewers rally in 8th inning but fall 6-5 to Dodgers
MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers thought Chris Carter's sacrifice fly had a chance to be much more.
Dodgers center fielder Joc Pederson crashed face first into the wall in deep center catching Carter's drive in the bottom of the eighth. Pederson crumpled onto the warning track. After several minutes, he got up with assistance of several teammates and head trainer Neil Rampe. Pederson walked off holding his chest and was replaced by Yasiel Puig. The Brewers pulled to 6-5 on the play, but Los Angeles held on to win Tuesday night by that score.
"I thought Pedersen made a heck of a play," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "He went full speed and made a great play. He doesn't catch that ball, we have no outs, a man on third base and we're looking pretty good. More than anything, that was definitely the play of the game without a doubt."
Pederson was relieved that the X-rays came back negative.
"Can't do anything about a broken bone," he said. "Sounds like day-to-day, so hopefully get on some anti-inflammatories, knock it out."
The Dodgers ended the eighth-inning rally when catcher Yasmani Grandl recovered Joe Blanton's wild pitch and threw back to him to just get Hernan Perez, who stole third and kept coming down the line. The Brewers challenged the tag play and after a review of 1 minute, 19 seconds, the out call was upheld.
The Dodgers went ahead with three runs on five hits in the top of the fourth off Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson (4-8).
Adrian Gonzalez and Pederson each drove in a run before rookie pitcher Julio Urias capped off the scoring with his first career base hit and RBI.
Anderson, who was pitching on eight days of rest including a skipped turn, allowed six runs on eight hits in four innings.
"He struggled tonight," Counsell said. "I don't think he had great feel for his off-speed pitches tonight. He just couldn't get his off-speed stuff going to get them on fastballs, really."
Grandal made it 6-2 when he hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the fifth.
Urias (1-2) walked a season-high six and struck out six in his seventh start overall and second against Milwaukee. The 19-year-old left-hander kept every Brewer hitless except for Ryan Braun's two-run double in the third and Jonathan Lucroy's double in the sixth.
"It's beautiful, incredible, it's one of the best days of my life," Urias said through an interpreter. "What more can I say?"
Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 23 save in 26 chances. Seven of the Dodgers' last nine victories have been by one run.
DODGE AN INJURY
"We took some X-rays, and I think we dodged a bullet," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Pederson's injury. "There's no fracture or anything like that. It's just a bruise. I think it was the AC joint. It's going to be day-to-day. He's sore, but there's nothing right now as far as us, a DL (disabled list) situation or anything like that right now. So, we're going to kind of see how he comes into tomorrow."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Dodgers: RHP Brandon McCarthy (Tommy John surgery) made his fourth rehab start Monday for Class A Rancho Cucamonga. He allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings and struck out three during his 72-pitch effort. . LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (left shoulder surgery) allowed one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday. He threw 26 pitches before a rain delay ended his sixth rehab start.
Brewers: OF Alex Presley was designated for assignment and INF/OF Jake Elmore had his contract selected from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Elmore started at second base.

Dodgers: RHP Brock Stewart makes his major league debut on Wednesday. Selected in the sixth round of the 2014 draft, he started this season with Rancho Cucamonga before advancing to Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he is 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA in three starts.
Brewers: RHP Junior Guerra (4-1, 3.67 ERA) makes his 11th start overall and second against the Dodgers this season. He received a no decision at Dodger Stadium on June 16. He allowed five runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four.
