Brewers recall Guerra, DFA Hoover
The Milwaukee Brewers made a series of roster moves Wednesday ahead of their matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals, recalling right-handed pitchers Junior Guerra and Jorge Lopez from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Outfielder Brett Phillips was optioned to the Sky Sox and right-handed pitcher J.J. Hoover was designated for assignment after brief appearances with the big club.
Guerra's return to the majors has been in the cards since Saturday, when the Brewers optioned right-hander Brandon Woodruff to Triple-A. Guerra, who broke out as a starter in 2016, struggled last year in 21 appearances for Milwaukee, finishing with a 5.12 ERA and 1.479 WHIP. He's set to start Wednesday afternoon.
Lopez has yet to allow a hit this season in 2 1/3 innings of work with the Sky Sox. Phillips has struggled at the plate this season, but made two appearances during his latest call-up, going 1-for-7 with four strikeouts. Hoover made a quick cameo Tuesday in a 5-3 loss to the Cardinals, facing eight batters in a single inning of work, while allowing four hits, three runs -- all of them earned -- and a walk.
