'Cake Eater Anthem' pokes fun at Edina's hockey reputation
"Life's never been sweeter, when you're just a cake eater."
That's part of the chorus of the viral "Cake Eater Anthem" rap published this week by the website Game ON! Minnesota. The song notes Edina's reputation for fancy cars, upscale shopping, country clubs and hockey talent and has accrued more than 110,000 views on YouTube since its publication Feb. 5.
In it, an apparently middle-aged man raps about the suburb's reputation, including its strength on the hockey rink.
"When it comes to hockey, nobody can stop me," he says. "My high school team, I was playing on the top three. Now my son is scoring piles. And if I don't like his line, I can whine to Curt Giles."
Giles played most of his NHL career with the Minnesota North Stars and now coaches the Edina High School boys hockey team. His program has played in 36 state tournaments and won back-to-back Class 2A state titles in 2013 and 2014.
The rap continues: "The history is deep. I probably might have told ya. All we do is win, win, win like Ikola. Dropping names like Chorske and Bellows. Tearing up the ice wearing green, white, yellow."
Ikola is a reference to Eveleth, Minn., hockey great Willard Ikola. Chorske refers to former University of Minnesota and NHL wing Tom Chorske, a current FOX Sports North analyst for Minnesota Wild games.
Chorske played high school hockey for Minneapolis Southwest, which is next to Edina. Bellows refers to former NHL great Brian Bellows, who resides in Edina.
Of the 237 NHL players born in Minnesota, 12 hail from Edina, according to hockey-reference.com. That includes current players Anders Lee and Jamie McBain.
Not bad for the city of about 50,000. Perhaps they can have their cake and eat it, too.
