Cards place Cecil on DL, recall Sherriff, put Reyes on 60-day DL

The injuries already are piling up for the St. Louis Cardinals, who placed left-hander Brett Cecil on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain Saturday morning. They also moved right-hander Alex Reyes from the 10-day DL to the 60-day version.

Cecil, 31, threw 10 pitches in the Cardinals' season-opening loss to the Mets on Thursday. He recorded one out and allowed one hit.

Taking Cecil's roster spot is left-hander Ryan Sherriff, who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. Sherriff, 27, pitched in seven spring training games before being optioned to Memphis on March 18. He was 2-1 with a 3.14 ERA in 13 relief appearances with the Cardinals in 2017. He recorded 15 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings.

Reyes, 23, missed the entire 2017 season following Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow. Reyes was moved to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for right-hander Greg Holland, whose free-agent signing was officially announced Saturday morning.

Holland has been optioned to Class A Palm Beach of the Florida State League to prepare for big-league club. He led the NL with 41 saves for the Rockies last season but was among the free agents who encountered a tepid offseason market.
