CFB AM: LSU fans are worried Syracuse will run out of alcohol
In one of the stranger matchups this week, LSU will go to upstate New York to play Syracuse in the first game of a home-and-home series between the schools.
It's been 73 years since the Tigers have played in New York, so this should serve as a word of caution for the good people of Syracuse: A tailgating storm unlike anything you've ever seen is headed your way this weekend. Just how wild will LSU fans get on their trip to the Northeast?
Put it this way: They're afraid Syracuse won't have enough alcohol for them.
"I've gone places in the past where they've run out (of alcohol)," Jason Ramezan, a vice president of the LSU Alumni Association, told syracuse.com. "They might meet their alcohol budget for the year. Tailgating at LSU is a science and it's a religion, and in the fall, it's almost better than the game. When we went up (to Syracuse) we said, 'Oh this is going to be interesting. There is not a lot of space.' It'll be different."
LSU sold out its away-game allotment of 5,200 tickets and then sold out a second ticket request. Ramezan guesses there will be about 7,500 LSU fans making the trip to Syracuse, all of them in search of every brown liquid they can find.
LSU, where it makes sense to be legitimately concerned about other towns' ability to handle how hard you party. I can't imagine LSU fans and alumni have ever been more proud than this moment right now. What a place.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY
Auburn benches Jeremy Johnson. Well, this was inevitable: Redshirt freshman Sean White will get the start against Mississippi State this weekend as struggling QB Jeremy Johnson heads to the bench after three ugly games. Auburn ranks 102nd in total offense at 5.26 yards per play. Repeat: A Gus Malzahn offense is only 0.01 yards per play better than Purdue. Something needed to change to spark the Tigers, and a QB switch is it at the moment, which is shocking considering Johnson entered the season with huge expectations and was a popular Heisman sleeper pick. "From a coaching standpoint, you have to do each week what you feel like is best for your team and for you offense," Malzahn said on Tuesday. "That's where we're at. I'm looking forward to seeing Sean. He's a guy that can flat-out throw it and can run it, too. He's got that little air of confidence that quarterbacks have."
It's Texas Tech's week to shine. The Red Raiders are coming off a huge win at Arkansas last week and now get No. 3 TCU in Lubbock during a week when there aren't many marquee games. Can Kliff Kingsbury's squad shake up the Big 12 race with a big upset this week? As Bruce Feldman points out in this piece, Tech is 3-0 primarily because it's improved a ton in turnovers and penalties, and Patrick Mahomes has developed into a really solid quarterback.
