Chicago Fire trialist improves chances with stunning 35-yard volley

Published Feb. 19, 2016 11:45 a.m. ET

John Goossens traveled to the United States in search of a contract. The former Feyenoord forward just finished up a short-term stint with Romanian club FC Voluntari. He linked up with Chicago Fire for preseason training in a bid to offer new coach Veljko Paunovic another option in the attacking third.

If his stunning goal in the 1-1 draw with NCAA side Portland Pilots on Thursday offers any indication, then the 27-year-old might just be able to help the Fire.

Goossens collected a clearance from the goalkeeper on his chest and then allowed it to drop toward his feet. With one sweeping motion, he lashed through it on the volley and smashed home from 35 yards.

Talk about making an impression. Even if Goossens fails to win a contract, he will still have this sensational goal to remember after his time with the Fire.
