The Arizona Coyotes will have the No. 7 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft following the results of the draft lottery on Saturday in Toronto.
The Coyotes have picked seventh only one other time in franchise history, and that one turned out OK -- Shane Doan in 1995 when the franchise was based in Winnipeg.
The last-place Toronto Maple Leafs won first pick in the lottery, putting them in position to take center Auston Matthews of Scottsdale with the first pick.
The Winnipeg Jets made the largest jump Saturday night, moving from the sixth to the second selection. The Columbus Blue Jackets moved up one spot to third.
What was also significant is that the Edmonton Oilers didn't win. Edmonton dropped two spots and will be picking fourth. The Oilers had the first pick in four of the previous six drafts winning the lottery three times.
The Maple Leafs had a 20-percent chance to select first, and became the first last-place team to win the lottery since 2010.
The Vancouver Canucks also dropped two spots, slipping from third to fifth. Calgary dropped one spot and will be picking sixth.
The draft will be held in Buffalo on June 24-25.
The Maple Leafs have had the first pick just once, in 1985 when they selected Wendel Clark. Team president Brendan Shanahan wouldn't provide any hints as to which player the Leafs might select, but Matthews, listed at 6-foot-2 and 194 pounds, is rated by NHL Central Scouting as the draft's top prospect. After spending three seasons playing for various USA Hockey developmental teams, Matthews elected to play for Zurich in Switzerland's professional league. He had 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points in 36 regular-season games but managed just three assists in four playoff games before Zurich was eliminated.
Next in the rankings are Finnish-born forwards Patrik Laine and Jesse Puljujarvi, who helped their nation win the world junior championship tournament in January.
The Coyotes also have the New York Rangers' first-round pick.
