Coyotes will open and close season on home ice
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Coyotes will open and close their 20th season in Arizona on home ice at Gila River Arena.
Their season opener, announced on Monday, will be Saturday, Oct. 15, against the Philadelphia Flyers. They will close out the season with a pair of home games, Thursday, April 6, vs. the Vancouver Canucks and Saturday, April 8, vs. the Minnesota Wild.
All told, 14 of the Coyotes' 41 home games will be on Saturday night. They will have a five-day midseason break from Jan. 8-12.
Vancouver and the Stanley Cup finalist San Jose Sharks will visit Glendale three times apiece. Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg will visit twice.
Sidney Crosby and the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins will make their lone Glendale appearance on Saturday, Feb. 11.
Other highlights include the New York Rangers on Thursday, Dec. 29; Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, Feb. 2; Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, Feb. 9; Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, March 16; and Washington Capitals on Friday, March 31.
The schedule features a pair of five-game homestand. The first wraps around Christmas -- from Dec. 19 through Dec. 29 and includes games against Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Dallas and the New York Rangers. The second stretches from Jan. 21 to Feb. 2 and features games against Tampa Bay, Florida, Vancouver, Los Angeles and Chicago.
Their longest road trip is their first one of the season -- immediately after the home opener they head north and east for six games, Oct. 18-27, at Ottawa, Montreal, the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, New Jersey and Philadelphia. They have a five-game trip from March 20-27, with stops in Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida, Washington and St. Louis.
