D-backs minor-league report: Swanson still sidelined due to concussion

Published Aug. 6, 2015 3:53 p.m. ET

Diamondbacks' draft pick Dansby Swanson remains sidelined while recovering from concussion symptoms -- postponing the start of the No. 1 overall draft pick's minor-league career.

Swanson, a shortstop out of Vanderbilt, was injured two weeks ago after being struck in the face by a pitch in his very first at-bat in a simulated game. The injury required 14 stitches on the side of his mouth.

"Every now and then he'll have a little spell where he doesn't feel quite right," farm director Mike Bell told the Arizona Republic. "So that slows it down a little bit. I think we're almost there, but we're waiting for that one day where he's completely symptom-free.

"I think at this point he's even frustrated. Just one little thing here or there that kind of creeps up where he might get a little light-headed or something."

Reno: Top pitching prospect Aaron Blair improved to 4-1 with the Aces on Wednesday, pitching six scoreless innings in a 7-0 victory over Tacoma. Blair gave up two hits and four walks and struck out six while improving his ERA to 3.86. Blair was backed by four home runs: Jamie Romak (team-leading 22nd), Nick Evans (15), Todd Glaesmann (10) and Blake Lalli (3).

Mobile: Cuban signee Yoan Lopez saw his record fall to 1-5 in the Bay Bears' 3-0 loss to Biloxi on Tuesday. Lopez, who has a 3.60 earned run average, gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three in six innings.

Visalia: Kevin Cron had three hits and drove in three runs to up his season total to a team-leading 79 in the Rawhide's 8-2 win over Stockton.

--Ryan Duran improved to 7-1 with a 2.66 ERA by giving up one unearned run in six innings in Tuesday's 4-1 victory over Stockton. Duran gave up three hits and didn't walk a batter.

Kane County: Wei-Chieh Huang pitched five scoreless innings on Tuesday and five relievers backed him up with seven scoreless innings in a 1-0, 12-inning win over South Bend. Huang's ERA is now 1.78, and he's given up more than two earned runs in one of his 12 appearances.

--German-born Marcus Solbach is 9-3 with a 2.80 ERA for the Cougars. Solbach, 6-feet-5 and 202 pounds, signed with the D-Backs in the off-season after a stint in independent ball.

He told milb.com that he's taken big strides since adding a curveball to his repertoire last winter in the Australian Baseball League.

"This is a guy who is going to move forward," Kane County pitching coach Doug Bochtler said. "We'll see what level he ends up playing at. You see guys who feature what he has in the big leagues as a fifth starter, so there's no ceiling, necessarily, because of his stuff."
