De La Rosa's dominance, Pollock's robbery top Giants
SAN FRANCISCO -- Once the ball came off Jarrett Parker's bat, Arizona center fielder A.J. Pollock figured he had a chance at it. Everything seemed to be aligned just right.
Pollock had two hits and reached his glove over the wall to take away a home run and the Diamondbacks won their fifth straight in San Francisco, beating the Giants 2-0 on Friday night.
Rubby De La Rosa and four relievers combined to pitch a 2-hitter against the Giants. De La Rosa (13-8) extended his scoreless streak against them to 13 2/3 innings.
De La Rosa, coming off one of his worst starts, allowed a hit over 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out five.
"Everything was working and I kept the ball down," De La Rosa said. "I had to forget about what happened (last start), work hard and go forward."
Andrew Chafin got the final out of the sixth, getting Brandon Belt to ground out with the bases loaded. Randall Delgado, Daniel Hudson and Brad Ziegler each threw a scoreless inning, with Ziegler recording his 27th save, and 25th in succession.
Pollock provided the evening's highlight with his over-the-fence grab.
"It all came together and the first step is the alighnment," Pollock said. "I felt like I had a good jump on it and when I got close to the fence I was comfortable and ran a good route."
Paul Goldschmidt also had two hits against Madison Bumgarner (18-8), who gave up only one earned run in eight innings but was denied in his bid to join Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs as baseball's only 19-game winners this season.
The win preserved the Diamondbacks' slim playoff hopes, although they would have to go 15-0 the rest of the way while hoping the Dodgers lose all of their remaining games. Arizona was eliminated from the wild-card contention earlier in the day when the Chicago Cubs beat St. Louis.
Bumgarner beat the Diamondbacks twice this season and pitched in and out of two jams early before running into trouble in the sixth.
Pollock, who led off the game with a single, opened the inning with his second hit off Bumgarner. One batter later, Goldschmidt lined a double down the left-field line. The ball rolled and glanced off the glove of Alejandro De Aza for an error, allowing Pollock to easily score from first.
Welington Castillo followed with an unusual 6-2-3 RBI groundout to make it 2-0.
Diamondbacks: LHP Patrick Corbin (5-4) has a 1.85 ERA over his four previous outings and will be making his first start at AT&T Park since Sept. 6, 2013.
Giants: RHP Mike Leake (10-8) earned his first win with San Francisco in his previous start and is attempting to win consecutive games for the first time since July.
