Fantasy Impact: Trevor Siemian named the starter in Denver
On Monday morning, Gary Kubiak wasted no time declaring the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback for Week 1: Trevor Siemian.
The search for a signal caller started in March, when Brock Osweiler inked a four-year, $72 million deal with Houston. Denver responded by trading for Mark Sanchez two days later. The Broncos added some competition when they traded up in the draft to select Paxton Lynch.
During this time, Siemian kept his head down and continued to work.
Fast-forward to the first preseason game, Sanchez got the start. He was 10-of-13 for 99 yards and threw a TD and an INT. Siemian took over in the second quarter (7-of-12 for 88 yards).
For the second game, Siemian got his chance to start. Though the numbers weren’t off the charts (10-of-14 for 75 yards), he looked significantly better than Sanchez (sacked three times).
After that, Kubiak saw enough. Sanchez didn’t even see the field for game three and Siemian continued to improve (10-of-17 for 122 yards).
Now, the second-year quarterback who has yet to complete a pass in an NFL regular season game has won the job over an eight-year veteran.
What this means for your fantasy football draft…
I downgraded Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders in my rankings when Sanchez was projected to be the starter. Now that Siemian is the man, I will give a slight boost to both receivers. Also, C.J. Anderson gets a small bump up in the rankings when you consider the fact that Denver should be able to move the ball a little more with Siemian.
What this means for Mark Sanchez…
Injuries happen every day in the NFL. Currently, the Cowboys will be without Tony Romo for 6-to-10 weeks. If the Dak Prescot experiment doesn’t work, look for Jerry Jones to sign the quarterback who once made it to three consecutive AFC Championship games.
