Former El Salvador defender Alfredo Pacheco shot to death in gas station attack
Former El Salvador defender Alfredo Pacheco was shot and killed in a brutal attack in his native country early Sunday morning.
Pacheco stopped at a gas station in Santa Ana with some friends when another group stopped them and opened fire at 3:30a.m. The former C.D. FAS and New York Red Bulls fullback was shot three times, including a fatal blow to his abdomen. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the age of 33.
Two other people were injured in the attack, according to Salvadoran law enforcement.
Pacheco earned a record 86 caps during his 11-year international career with El Salvador, but he received a lifetime ban from the sport in September 2013 for match fixing. He spent most of his club career with FAS, but he also played one season on loan for New York Red Bulls in 2009 and wrapped up his career with spells at Águila and Isidro Metápan.
Pacheco is the second prominent international player killed by gunfire in Central America this month. Honduras midfielder Arnold Peralta was shot to death in an incident in front of a mall in La Ceiba, Honduras on Dec. 10.
