The New Orleans Saints claimed former Green Bay Packers quarterback Joe Callahan off waivers Friday, ending the Packers' bid to sign the promising rookie to their practice squad.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Wesley -- a Division III college in Delaware -- Callahan impressed in the preseason, throwing for 499 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions for an 88.2 passer rating through two exhibition starts.

The Packers waived Callahan on Thursday to free up a roster spot for defensive tackle Mike Pennel and cornerback Demetri Goodson, who are set to return this week after being suspended for the first four games of the season.
