Former Rams RB Lawrence McCutcheon to retire after 42 years with organization
Following 42 years spent with the Rams organization, former running back Lawrence McCutcheon is retiring.
McCutcheon, who spent 44 total years in the NFL, will serve as a consultant to the personnel department, the team announced on Thursday.
"McCutcheon has left an indelible mark on the Rams, as well as the National Football League," said Rams General Manager Les Snead. "The contributions he made as a player as well as a talent evaluator in our personnel department have been invaluable to this organization. We will miss 'Clutch' being around on routine basis, but he will always be an important part of our family."
'Clutch' ended his Rams' playing career (1972-79) as the franchise's all-time leading rusher (at the time) and now ranks fourth on the all-time Rams list with 6,186 yards.
"I loved having him on the team. You just knew when we snapped the ball, he was going to carry it and he was going to get it done," said Hall of Fame teammate Jack Youngblood. "I trusted him a lot as a teammate."
McCutcheon, a Plainview, Texas native and Colorado State product, joined the club's personnel department in 1982 and spent the last four years as a national scout.
