Freshman RB Johannesson shines in Gophers spring game
Minnesota fans saw their first extended looks at young quarterbacks Seth Green and Demry Croft during Saturday's spring game.
It was the running backs, however, who stood out, especially redshirt freshman James Johannesson.
The Fargo, N.D., native rushed for 130 yards on 22 carries and scored the game's lone offensive touchdown as the gold team defeated the white team 19-7 at TCF Bank Stadium.
Jaylen Waters scored a touchdown on a 50-yard interception return for the white team, and Emmit Carpenter kicked four field goals for the gold team, which earned a full rack of ribs for each player with the victory.
Minnesota's starting quarterback, redshirt senior Mitch Leidner, did not play after undergoing foot surgery this offseason. Backup Demry Croft was just 8-for-19 for 45 yards and two interceptions for the white team.
Minnesota natives freshman Seth Green and junior Conor Rhoda quarterbacked the gold team. Green, from East Ridge High School, was 2-for-6 passing with one interception. Rhoda, from Cretin-Derham Hall, was 4-for-8 for 37 yards.
Defensive back Alexander Starks led all defenders with 14 tackles.
