Giambi set to return to Indians on Monday

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians designated hitter Jason Giambi will be activated from the disabled list on Monday after recovering from a fractured rib.

The 43-year-old recently was at Double-A Akron for a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. Giambi said he's ready to play, but the Indians will wait until after the weekend, when they open a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals.

Giambi took batting practice before Friday's series opener against Toronto.

He said the time in the minors was good for his swing and a reminder of his path to the big leagues.

Indians manager Terry Francona said the team has missed Giambi, who brings leadership, years of experience and "can change the game in the batter's box."

Giambi injured his rib during spring training and was placed on the DL on March 30. He batted .183 last season, but hit nine homers and drove in 31 runs in 186 at-bats.
