Goldy can't help NL avoid defeat in All-Star Game
Making his franchise-record-tying fourth straight appearance in the MLB All-Star Game, Diamondbacks' first baseman Paul Goldschmidt went hitless in three at-bats as the National League fell to the American League, 4-2, at Petco Park in San Diego.
Goldschmidt entered the game in the fifth inning, as a pinch hitter for the Nationals' Bryce Harper. Goldschmidt flew out to right against Jose Quintana of the White Sox.
In the seventh against Yankees reliever Dellin Betances, Goldschmidt flew out to center. And in the ninth against Orioles closer Zach Britton, representing the potential tying run, Goldschmidt reached on a fielder's choice before Nolan Arenado of the Rockies grounded into a game-ending double play.
Goldschmidt's run of All-Star appearances matches Hall of Fame left-hander Randy Johnson (1999-2002) for most consecutive as a D-backs player. Johnson and Luis Gonzalez hold the overall record of five each.
"I definitely don't take any of the All-Star Games I'm in for granted," Goldschmidt said leading up to the game. "I'm excited to be here and looking forward to having fun, but you know how it goes. You get used to being here and seeing some of the guys again. But it could be my last time, so I just try to take everything in and go out there and play well."
The D-backs start the second half of the season Friday, when they open a three-game series against the Dodgers at Chase Field.
