ICE CHIPS: Mrazek, Athanasiou help Wings top Caps on Fedorov Night

MAGIC MRAZEK
Petr Mrazek stood on his head Tuesday night to keep Washington off the scoreboard and help the Red Wings earn their eighth victory of the season.
Mrazek (5-3-0) was peppered with 38 shots en route to his first shutout of the season and sixth of his career. Mrazek recorded the most saves by a Wings goaltender in a shutout since teammate Jimmy Howard's 41-save night Dec. 3, 2010 at Anaheim.
"Unbelivable," Andreas Athanasiou said of Mrazek's performance. "He stopped some big shots from Ovie (Alex Ovechkin) there, he's got a cannon over there on that one side so he kept us in the game and was definitely a big part of the win."
WINGS FIRST
Athanasiou, who was recalled from Grand Rapids on Saturday, scored his first career NHL goal four minutes into the third period.
Athanasiou snuck the puck past Braden Holtby at a sharp angle from the far left goal line. Tuesday marked Athanasiou's second career NHL game, and his lone goal stood as the game-winner.
"Washington's such a good team and I wanted to get a win while I was here so it feels good," Athanasiou said.
FEDOROV HONORED
Sergei Fedorov was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Monday night, and flew to Detroit Tuesday morning to be honored at Fedorov Night at Joe Louis Arena.
Fedorov sported his brand new Hall of Fame jacket and ring and received a standing ovation when he walked on the ice for the ceremonial puck drop.
"It's a good, exciting feeling just to feel and see once again this atmosphere at Joe Louis Arena and be part of the game I love and see familiar faces on the ice," Fedorov said.
Fedorov, who was drafted alongside defenseman and fellow HOF inductee Nicklas Lidstrom in the 1989 NHL entry draft, played 1,248 games with the Red Wings, Ducks, Blue Jackets and Capitals.
He is currently tied with Caps forward Alex Ovechkin as the highest-scoring Russian player in NHL history with 483 goals.
OVECHKIN DENIED
Ovechkin entered the game needing just one goal to surpass Fedorov as the highest-scoring Russian player in NHL history.
Ovechkin recorded a whopping 15 shots on goal, but Mrazek kept the Caps forward from spoiling Fedorov Night at The Joe.
"Well we had a little plan to tire him out, we thought if he got 15, he's got ice bags on arm right now so we're going to try to come up with a different plan," Wings coach Jeff Blashill said with a laugh.
