Lake Placid chosen to host '23 Winter World University Games
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) The International University Sports Federation has selected Lake Placid as the host for the 2023 Winter World University Games.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced in Albany on Monday that local organizers from the Adirondack region and the Lausanne, Switzerland-based FISU have signed a memorandum of understanding to hold the event in the Lake Placid area.
Cuomo called the northern New York village, site of the 1932 and '80 Winter Olympics, the ''perfect location'' for the 2023 event.
The World University Games are held every two years in a different city. The 11-day winter competition typically draws about 2,500 student-athletes who compete in sports including skiing, speed skating, figure skating and hockey.
Lake Placid hosted the Winter World University Games in 1972. Buffalo hosted the organization's summer games in 1993.
