Leach still believes in 64-team college football playoff
Washington State likely won't be in the College Football Playoff discussion anytime soon, but head coach Mike Leach wants to make it more fair for everyone.
Many are calling for the playoff to be expanded from four teams to eight or 16. The always opinionated Leach wants it to be more like college basketball March Madness.
"Sixty-four," he told ESPN.com's Heather Dinich. "Why not?
"I don't know why you don't have 64 teams. The notion of pinpointing and selecting four perfectly, well that's not going to happen. That can't happen effectively."
This isn't the first time Leach has stated his case on the matter. He first discussed his idea of a 64-team playoff prior to his final season at Texas Tech in 2009.
But the first-ever college football playoff only included four teams, and the final regular season standings came with similar controversy as the BCS era.
Eventual national champion Ohio State got the final spot last season while Big 12 co-champions TCU and Baylor were left out.
Leach believes a bigger bracket would put to rest any debate.
"If you've got 64, there wouldn't be a lot of debate," he said. "It would be indisputable that it was settled on the field and somebody that wins playoff games accordingly deserves to be champion and there's no debate. It would be great fun to watch -- just like it is at all the other levels."
