Magic extend contract of general manager Hennigan

The Orlando Magic announced Thursday that they have extended the contract of general manager Rob Hennigan through the 2017-18 season.

"Under the leadership of Rob, we feel that we are positioning ourselves to be able to contend in a long-term, sustainable fashion," chief executive officer Alex Martins said in a statement released by the Magic. "We are proud of the work that Rob and our basketball operations department has done to this point and we look forward to taking the next steps in the process."

Hennigan was named general manager of the Magic in June 2012 after spending the previous four seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, including his last two seasons as the team's assistant general manager/player personnel. The Magic are coming off a season in which they finished with a 25-57 record and made a coaching change in February, with James Borrego being promoted from an assistant to replace Jacque Vaughn.

"We want to be a playoff team. We're not trying to be a lottery team. That's counter to our goals," Hennigan said two weeks ago during the Magic's season-ending exit interviews.

With the Magic in the midst of a coaching search, the extension puts to rest any chance a new coach would have of holding personnel power.
