Marquette's coaching staff is taking shape, as Steve Wojciechowski added former Drake head coach Mark Phelps to his staff Wednesday.
Phelps joins Chris Carrawell as assistant coaches under Wojciechowski, and the new Marquette head coach has one spot left on his staff.
"When I started putting my first staff together, one of the priorities was finding an individual with head coaching experience who was also in possession of a strong passion for the game of basketball, and I couldn't be more excited about adding Mark Phelps in that role," Wojciechowski said. "Mark's career in collegiate basketball speaks for itself, and I had the opportunity to compete against him for a number of years in the ACC and have always respected him as not only a coach, but a person as well."
Phelps spent five seasons as the head coach at Drake, accumulating a 77-86 record before being fired after the 2012-13 season. He led the Bulldogs to their first postseason win since 1975 in 2012 and had the most wins of any coach in school history through the first five seasons.
After spending six years as a high school coach in Virginia, Phelps joined Herb Sendek's staff at North Carolina State in 1996. He stayed with the Wolfpack until 2006 when he followed Sendek to Arizona State. Phelps was the associate head coach of the Sun Devils for two seasons before accepting the job at Drake.
The 48-year-old spent 2013-14 as an assistant coach under Frank Haith at Missouri.
