Midweek Stock Report: Wolves' Wiggins, Towns surging

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:33 p.m. ET

Every Wednesday, FOX Sports North takes a look at which athletes' stock is trending up and whose is trending down.

In other words, who is heating up and who is cooling off.

With that in mind, let's "take stock" of the current Minnesota sports scene.

Andrew Wiggins, Wolves forward

After two games of the Karl-Anthony Towns show Wiggins went off in a loss to the Brooklyn Nets, scoring a career-high 36 points and hitting six 3-pointers, another career-high for the third-year star.

Karl-Anthony Towns, Wolves center

Towns is now averaging just over 22 points per game this season following back-to-back 30-point games in losses to Denver and Oklahoma City. It was the first such streak of Towns' young career. He isn't satisfied with individual stat-padding, instead telling FOX Sports North's Marney Gellner that he has to do more to help the Wolves win.

Tommy Novak, Gophers forward

The Gophers' rivalry with former WCHA foe North Dakota returned over the weekend, and after a three-year break it didn't disappoint. Novak led the charge for Minnesota, scoring twice in a 5-all tie Friday, including the extra-attacker goal that sent the game to overtime. He added an assist in a 2-0 Gophers win Saturday.

Minnesota Duluth men's hockey

The No. 1-ranked Bulldogs kept right on rolling after sweeping North Dakota last weekend. They went on the road and came away with another sweep in the followup, coming from behind after surrendering an early goal twice to upend St. Cloud State 5-3, 5-3.

Laquon Treadwell, Vikings receiver

After weeks and weeks of waiting Treadwell finally logged some substantial playing time for the Vikings. The rookie receiver was on the field for a season-high 17 snaps Sunday, and hauled in his first career catch, a 15-yard strike on third down.

Kris Dunn, Wolves guard

The early returns on the Wolves' first-round pick have been mostly positive, but Dunn struggled big-time in a loss to the Nets. Dunn logged just under 16 minutes of playing time, his lowest totals since his debut, and was yanked for second-year guard Tyus Jones in the first half. He finished with four rebounds, three assists, a steal and no points.

Ricky Rubio, Wolves guard

Rubio's sprained elbow could keep him out for longer than anticipated. He didn't travel with the team on their latest road trip, while the Wolves have yet to release an update on his return.

Xavier Rhodes, Vikings cornerback

Rhodes was having an otherwise solid game before an uncharacteristic missed tackle led to Golden Tate's walkoff touchdown at U.S. Bank Stadium. With Detroit on the attack in overtime Rhodes dove towards Tate as he danced along the left sideline, missing badly before Tate flipped into the end zone for the win. Harrison Smith and Andrew Sendejo share credit for the whiff as well, but Rhodes' miss stands out due to his otherwise consistent play throughout the first half of the season.
