Miller takes no-hitter into 6th, strikes out 10 in Reno debut
RENO, Nev. -- Making his first Triple-A start since 2012, Shelby Miller struck out 10 and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning Tuesday night in the Reno Aces' 9-6 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
Optioned from the Diamondbacks over the weekend, Miller stifled the opposition over the first five frames. The 25-year-old issued a pair of walks to Sky Sox leadoff man Kyle Wren in the first and third but sandwiched five strikeouts in between.
A two-out error in the top of the fourth extended the inning momentarily, but Miller struck out Michael Reed with a fastball for his seventh strikeout. The 2015 National League All-Star maintained the momentum by striking out the side in the fifth, giving him 10 strikeouts in his Aces debut.
Colorado Springs finally notched its first hit in the sixth, when Nate Orf lined a one-out double to the wall in left off Miller. An infield single by Manny Pina followed, setting up a towering three-run shot off the bat of Josmil Pinto.
Miller settled in afterward and departed in the seventh after a two-out single. Miller joined Archie Bradley as the only Aces pitchers to notch at least 10 strikeouts in a game this season.
Miller was acquired for outfielder Ender Inciarte, pitcher Aaron Blair and the organization's top prospect, shortstop Dansby Swanson, to be the No. 2 starter in the rotation. He struggled from the start of the season, compiling a 2-9 record with a 7.14 earned run average in 14 starts.
"I've been struggling up here for a while," Miller said in the D-backs clubhouse shortly after his demotion was announced. "I'm surprised I stayed up here this long."
Chis Owings had four hits and has eight in 11 at-bats through three rehab contests with the Aces.
