MLS Roundup: Toronto FC open Rivalry Week with victory over Montréal
Toronto FC 3 -- Montréal Impact 1
All three TFC Designated Players scored as the Reds emerged victorious in the 401 Derby. Ambroise Oyongo gave the Impact the lead against the run of play earlier in the first half, but Michael Bradley engineered a fine late run to procure a deserved equalizer. Bradley then curled a delightful ball over the top to prompt Jozy Altidore’s low blast to give TFC the lead. Sebastian Giovinco won a penalty and then subsequently converted from the spot to guarantee the points at BMO Field.
LA Galaxy 5 -- Portland Timbers 0
Columbus Crew SC 2 -- New England Revolution 1
Kei Kamara ended Crew SC’s six-match winless streak by striking twice to quell the Revolution. Lee Nguyen took advantage of some slack Crew SC defending in the opening minute to give the Revs an early foothold. Kamara produced a prompt response to restore parity inside the first five minutes. The early exchange set the stage for a controversial second-half winner as Ethan Finlay appeared to handle before square for Kamara to increase his league-leading haul to 12 goals on the season.
Chicago Fire 0 -- D.C. United 1
Conor Doyle thrashed home from the edge of the penalty area to move D.C. United 10 points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference. Both teams struggled to generate chances on the evening, but Doyle pounced from the remnants of a set piece to separate the sides on the night. The result left the Fire with just one win in its past nine matches.
New York Red Bulls 1 -- Real Salt Lake 0
The drought is over in Harrison after the Red Bulls claimed their first victory since May 10. Mike Grella benefited from good work by Sean Davis and Kemar Lawrence Jesse Marsch’s side followed the opener with an energetic performance to garner the points against a RSL side reduced to nine men after red cards to Javier Morales and Demar Phillips either side of the interval.
Orlando City 2 -- Colorado Rapids 0
Cyle Larin and Kaka waited out a 25-minute weather delay before propelling Orlando City to a comfortable victory at the Citrus Bowl. The home side carried most of the play, but it waited until the second half to claim the points. Larin continued his fine run of form when he tucked Rafael Ramos’ tempting cross past Clint Irwin to give Orlando City the lead. Kaka hit the post in his first attempt to extend the advantage, but he eventually slotted the critical second inside the far post to hand the expansion side a third win in four attempts.
Philadelphia Union 1 -- Seattle Sounders 0
C.J. Sapong supplied the Union with the only goal necessary to defeat the tattered Sounders at PPL Park. Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei produced a first-half penalty save on Maurice Edu to keep his side on level terms, but Sapong nodded home his fourth goal in five games to cinch the points inside the final half-hour.
