Niederreiter to play for Switzerland in world championship
Minnesota Wild forward Nino Niederreiter will play for Switzerland in the 2016 IIHF World Championship May 6-22 in Russia.
The 23-year-old Niederreiter scored 20 goals and added 23 assists in 2015-16, his third season with the Wild. He added a goal and five assists in Minnesota's Stanley Cup playoff series against the Dallas Stars.
Niederreiter previously represented Switzerland in the 2014 Olympics, the 2013, 2012 and 2010 World Championships and the 2011 and 2010 World Junior Championships. He helped Switzerland earn its first medal -- a silver -- in the past 60 years at the 2013 World Championships, leading Switzerland with five goals in that tournament.
Niederreiter is eligible for Team Europe's roster for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Sixteen players have been named to each country's roster, and the final seven will be announced June 1.
