NL honors Matt Carpenter as its player of the week

ST. LOUIS -- As Matt Carpenter enters a week in which he is expected to move from third base to second, he does so on a roll -- such a roll that the National League honored him as its player of the week.

Carpenter batted .560 in the week of May 30-June 5. Half of his 14 hits went for extra bases (five doubles, two triples), and he scored 10 runs. He opened the week with consecutive 4-for-5 performances at Milwaukee. Two of his other four games last week were multi-hit games, and he had only one oh-fer.

Carpenter, a third baseman by trade, manned second base for the Cardinals in 2013. He is expected to return to second this week to make room for Jhonny Peralta, who has been out since early March recovering from thumb surgery. Peralta, the team's starting shortstop the last two seasons, will move over in the wake of the emergence of rookie Aledmys Diaz at short.
