Orlando City 2 -- Columbus Crew SC 0

Kaka opened the scoring as the expansion side eased into the last eight at the Citrus Bowl. Orlando City coach Adrian Heath opted to play his started and reaped the dividends with a two-goal lead by halftime. Kaka opened the scoring after 20 minutes to give his side a firm foothold. Carlos Rivas doubled the advantage with a thunderous drive from 22 yards to pull Orlando City clear. Crew SC boss Gregg Berhalter inserted Wil Trapp (concussion) in the late stages, but the visitors could not find a way to claw back into the tie.

Philadelphia Union 2 -- D.C. United 1

The home side overcame an early red card to C.J. Sapong and a deficit to MLS’ top side to book a place in the last eight. Sapong placed the Union at a substantial advantage when he procured his dismissal after 25 minutes. Jairo Arrieta turned home two minutes later to send United in front. The lead proved surprisingly short-lived as the sputtering Union engineered a riposte after the break. A quick ball over the top caught out the United defense and paved the way for Eric Ayuk to slot home after 56 minutes. Fabinho completed the comeback inside the final 15 minutes as he played a quick one-two and then smashed home from a sharp angle to secure a place in the last eight.

Chicago Fire 3 -- Charlotte Independence 1

Mike Magee marked his first start since returning from injury with a pair of goals as the Fire shepherded the dogged USL side out of the Open Cup. Tomasz Zahorski slotted the Independence in front with a cool finish inside the first five minutes. Magee responded eight minutes before the break with his first goal since August. Lovel Palmer placed the home side in front with a rasping drive from distance early in the second half. Magee combined with second-half substitute Patrick Nyarko to book a date with Orlando City in the quarterfinals.
