Owner of Milwaukee Bucks Daughter, Mallory Edens, Wins NBA Draft Lottery

Published May. 21, 2014 9:54 a.m. ET

Last night the NBA had its own Katherine Webb moment. Webb, the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron who appeared on television during the broadcast of the 2013 BCS title game, went from virtual anonymity to superstar status in the blink of an eye. Her Twitter followers surged from a few thousand to over two hundred thousand during the course of the Alabama-Notre Dame game.

Well, now Katherine Webb's got company.

Last night the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks sent his 18 year old daughter, Mallory Edens, to represent the team at the draft lottery. The Bucks, who had the best overall chance for the number one pick, instead wound up with the number two pick. But Mallory Edens won social media. Edens, who began the night with a couple of hundred Twitter followers, now has nearly 30,000 followers.

Indeed, if you compare the audiences for the BCS title game and the NBA draft lottery, Edens' surge in Twitter followers is almost identical to Katherine Webb's. The BCS title game was watched by 26.4 million people whereas the NBA draft lottery was only watched by a few million. This makes Edens' surge to 30,000 Twitter followers the numerical equivalent of Webb's climb to over 200,000 followers.

So congrats to the newest star created by sports television. It's hard to believe that the Bucks didn't know exactly what they were doing when they decided to send the owner's 18 year old daughter to represent the team, but now they've created the NBA's own Katherine Webb.
