Padres finally score but still lose to Giants again, 8-2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The Padres ended their latest long scoring drought on light-hitting Jon Jay's home run leading off the sixth inning.
They didn't do much else at the plate.
Jay's home run briefly tied the game but the San Francisco Giants scored twice in the bottom of the inning and added five runs in the eighth to beat San Diego 8-2 on Tuesday night.
"We pushed a couple across but it wasn't much," Padres manager Andy Green said. "We had a few opportunities. Actually hit some balls hard today, a number of lineouts right at guys. Some better swings today than yesterday for sure, so it's good to build on that."
Generating runs is still a problem, though.
San Diego stranded runners at third base in the third and fifth and left the bases loaded in the seventh.
Jay's homer and Hector Sanchez's pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth were the only bright spots on offense for the Padres, who lost their third in a row and fell to 0-8 against the Giants this season.
"It's just one of those things, when it's not for you it's not for you," Jay said. "We played well against the Dodgers . and we've had our chances here. The games we've lost, the way we've lost them, they're close games and we've been right there."
Brandon Crawford drove in four runs and Jarrett Parker homered to back Jeff Samardzija and the streaking Giants.
Samardzija (7-2) has won three consecutive decisions and six of seven after giving up a run and six hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
Andrew Cashner (2-4) came off the disabled list and gave the Padres a six-inning start. He allowed three runs and four hits, walked four and struck out one.
"I thought I threw the ball pretty well," Cashner said. "My slider was pretty good. I just have to make better pitches in the sixth."
KEMP'S TOUGH NIGHT
Matt Kemp had a forgettable night on the basepaths. The Padres slugger singled in the first but was thrown out by left fielder Parker trying to go to second on the play. Kemp then doubled leading off the eighth and was thrown out at third trying to extend the hit into a triple. Kemp was initially ruled safe but the Giants challenged and the call was overturned after replay. "The first at-bat the situation calls for aggression there," Green said. "That's a good aggressive play and nice play on their part to throw him out. More than anything we're pleased with the way he swung the bat tonight. Some good things to build on there."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Padres: 1B Wil Myers was given the night off after feeling some tightness in his left forearm during Monday night's game. Green said Myers would likely rest Wednesday, too. ... RHP Kevin Quackenbush was optioned to Triple-A El Paso to make room for Cashner. ... LHP Matt Thornton pitched a scoreless inning for Class A Lake Elsinore in a rehab assignment and could join the team in Arizona.
